About this limited edition art print
The Oni embodies the embodiment of malevolent forces that seek to infiltrate households. To ward off these negative energies “the Bean Throwing Festival,” is celebrated on February 3rd, signifying the transition from winter to spring.
During this fascinating ritual, a family member dons the demon mask, becoming the personification of the Oni that lurks around the house. Armed with a handful of beans, children playfully throw them at the Oni, symbolizing the expulsion of negativity. Once the Oni is banished, joy and good fortune can thrive within the household throughout the upcoming year.
Ari Imai’s artistic rendition of “The Oni” showcases her iconic and colourful style. The mask takes centre stage, radiating with vibrant splashes of colour, explosive energy, and captivating textures. Inside the mask, intricate scribbles and landscapes add an element of depth and mystery, reflecting the rich layers of Japanese folklore.
